Information Session and Resident Meet-and-Greet

On the Monday before your interview day, we will hold an information session during which you will learn about our program and our current residents. This is an opportunity to interact with our chair, Frances Jensen; program director, Laura Stein; associate program directors, Geoffrey Aguirre, Rohini Samudralwar, and Earllondra Brooks; and our program coordinators, Vanna Hing and Rachel Mroz.

We will spend about 90 minutes describing our health system and department, the preliminary year and residency, diversity and inclusion, and career development. Following a break, there will be another 75 minutes for you to interact with our residents and the other applicants that week.

This is a casual session, so no need to dress up.

Interview Day

We will conduct interviews by remote video connection (e.g., Zoom). We understand that there may be internet or other technical issues outside of your control. We promise to adapt to your circumstances and conduct your interview using a different video conference system or by telephone if needed.

Each of our interview sessions is about 4 hours. We have morning sessions beginning at 9:15 AM ET and ending at 1:30 PM ET, and midday sessions beginning at 11:45 AM ET and ending at 4:00 PM ET. During your interview session, you will attend our noon educational conference, have time set aside to meet more of our residents, and interview with the program leadership. You will meet with our program director, Laura Stein, and a set of three other interviewers drawn from our associate program directors (Geoffrey Aguirre, Rohini Samudralwar, or Earllondra Brooks) and additional education faculty, including Ray Price, our previous Program Director and Chief of Neurology at Pennsylvania Hospital, Amy Pruitt, our clerkship director and Vice Chair of Education, and Sashank Prasad, Chief of Neurology at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

We don’t wear formal business attire at work, so no need for you to do so in the interview. We recommend that you dress as you would when seeing patients in the clinic. For example, a collared shirt instead of a suit coat and tie.

Optional Mentor Meetings

Based on your background and interests, we can arrange additional virtual meetings with other members of the neurology department and Penn faculty from across the University at a mutually convenient time that does not need to be on your chosen interview day. Please contact NeuroMatch@pennmedicine.upenn.edu if you would like to schedule optional mentor meetings.

Optional In-Person Second Look

On the day of the second look, applicants will attend noon conference and take a guided tour of the hospital. There will also be an opportunity to interact with current residents in a social setting. This experience is solely for the benefit of the applicant to help them make their ranking decision. Program rank lists are submitted prior to second look dates.

Ranking Penn

The Penn Neurology Residency offers both Categorical positions with a preliminary internship in the UPHS system and Advanced positions with a guaranteed preliminary internship in the UPHS system if desired (see below for details). We encourage all applicants to rank both programs.

Categorical Program

There are 10 categorical positions. All categorical positions include a year of internal medicine training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP).

For the Categorical program, rank 1628180C0

Advanced Program

There are 4 advanced positions. All advanced positions offer a guaranteed year of internal medicine training at Pennsylvania Hospital (PAH) if you wish.

For the advanced program, rank 1628180A0.

You will then need to create a supplemental rank list of preliminary programs. Instructions here:

Once you have ranked the advanced program, it is then possible to search for the PAH program. Rank 1628140P3 for the linked PAH intern year.

Note that there is a different code (ending in P0) that is not available for the advanced program. Please do not try to use this code.

If you prefer a different program for your PGY1 year, then rank your preliminary year program of choice first in your supplemental list along with our advanced neurology program (1628180A0).

There is no risk of not matching into the PAH preliminary program even if you do not rank it first. These four positions are reserved for Penn neurology until an applicant matches into our advanced program and an intern year, either at PAH or a different preliminary program that the applicant has ranked higher. Only after all four advanced positions are filled are any unfilled PAH preliminary intern positions made available to be filled by a non-neurology preliminary applicant. Therefore, we recommend ranking the PAH program (1628140P3) somewhere in your list as it guarantees you a preliminary medicine internship, just like a categorical program.
